History
Tirupparankunram constitutes one of the 6 shrines special to Subramanya (Aru Padai Veedu). It is a cave temple cut into a rock bed and it is a well visited shrine. Praises of this temple has been sung even in the sangam literature dating back to 200 BC. Tamil Bhrami inscriptions in the temple also date back to this period. The current structure dates back to the Pandya kings of the 8th century AD. The Saivite Saint poets Sundarar and Sambandar have sung the glories of this temple and so has Arunagirinathar.
This is the temple where the marriage of Lord Subrahmanya and Devayanai, daughter of Indra took place. The temple has a lofty 150 feet high Rajagopuram. The entire temple has 5 halls or mandapams, going upwards in steps. The pillars in the halls are of great sculptural splendour. The Naik Kings of Madurai, especially Tirumalai Naik have made endowments to this temple. Two tanks Lakshmi Teertham and Saravanapoigai are attached to the temple |
