Ladies Corner :: Rangoli

Rangoli ( also known as Kolam in Southern India) is a traditional art of decorating entrances, prayer rooms of Indian houses. . Made with coloured powder, the designs and patterns in some cases carry a certain amount of religious significance. The patterns made are meant to denote the desires of the worshiper and in these cases one has to be careful of the direction of the design and the elements that go into it. These are sometimes called Yantras.The powder primarily consisting of rice flour is ground very fine, and is used to draw intricate and ritual designs. This art is typically transferred from generation to generation and from friend to friend. Popular magazines publish new designs of Rangoli every week and on special occasions there are Rangoli contests. Onam is one such festival in Kerala which is very well known for Pookolam which basically is Rangoli with the use of flowers.
