Maha Ganapathy Temple

History

Chokkanathapuram is one of the ancient villages where Tamilans migrated to. This is situated in Palakkad by the side of the Nila River. The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple situated in this village of Chokkanathapuram was constructed in ancient times around 1865. The temple is facing East. Nila River flows on the North of the village. Along with this two other temples (1) Kalpathy Kasi-Viswanatha Swami Temple, which also is situated by the Nila River and (2) Kallekulangara Emur Bhagavathi's Temple were also established during this time.

The presiding deities of this temple are Meenakshi Amman and Sunderaswarar - another name of Lord Shiva. Other deities around are Maha Ganapathy, Sri. Murugan - represented by Nagars, Lord Dhakshinamoorthy (another form of Lord Shiva for Lord Nataraja (Lord Shiva in Dancing rose), Chandikeswaran, Kalabhairava (Sub Dieties), besides Navagrahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Budha, Brahaspathi, Brigu, Saturn, Rahu & Kethu)
